本剧讲述的是乾隆青少年时代在上书房读书的一段故事。乾隆虽然很早就被朝野上下，包括雍正本人视为未来帝位的不二人选。但是，在他的成长过程中，也经历了很多的挫折，磨难和痛苦。本剧以春夏秋冬四季为经纬线索。形成了单元剧加连续剧的戏剧格局，同时，又以道德教育和戏剧性结合为主要叙事风格，形成了一种寓教于乐的审美关照。
