台湾云林县口湖乡后厝村的一个农家，生下一个小腿萎缩，脚板上翘，双足畸形的男孩郑丰喜。他六岁时，跟走江湖耍猴卖药的赵老伯流浪他乡，乞食糊口，八岁时跟哥哥在离家数里外的鸭寮放鸭，一次遇到风雨和大水，几乎被淹死。他刻苦努力读完中学，并以优异成绩考上中兴大学法律系。在中学戴校长和矫正医院徐院长的支持鼓励下装上假肢后，更不怕摔破手脚，学会骑自行车上学。他的坚强毅力和顽强奋斗的精神感动了同校法律系女同学吴继钊。他们相爱了。但继钊的父母坚决反对这门婚事，断然将女儿关在家里，不准她上学。后虽同意她继续上学，但不许她与丰喜来往，并令其表兄吕良仁暗中监视。一日，强大台风袭来，市民纷纷离家逃难。水已淹没丰喜的床和坐椅，房屋亦有倒塌危险。在这危急时刻，继钊冲破表兄的阻挠去救丰喜。在狂风暴雨中他们紧抱在一起，发誓永不分离。
