该剧根据孔二狗爆红网络的长篇小说《东北往事之黑道风云二十年》改编而成，是一部反映东北地区长达20余年社会变迁厚重长篇史诗，故事讲述了1986年至今20余年来，北方某市黑道组织触目惊心的发展历程这一段事。这是对改革开放31年的一次不同寻常的纪念和追忆，沉重地反思在过去几十年中所得到的和所失去的。
