该剧原本将故事地点定为奥罗拉市（Aurora），但为了避免刺激2012年奥罗拉市电影院枪击事件受害者的家属，制片方临时改变了故事地点。该剧由《谋杀》（The Killing）编剧Aaron Zelman撰写，故事根据一个小说家的处女作改编。虽然小说要9月才会出版，但颇具诱惑力的故事情节促使多家制片公司参与改编权竞标大战。
