杨善洲生前曾任南省保山地委书记，2010年10月10日因病逝世。他为官多年，但老母、妻子和三个女儿却一直在乡下艰辛生活。为了兑现自己当初“为当地群众做一点实事不要任何报酬”的承诺，退休后，主动放弃进省城安享晚年的机会，扎根大亮山，义务植树造林，一干就是22年，临终前将5亩、价值3亿元的林场无偿上缴给国家。电视剧《杨善洲》正是根据这一真实事件改编的。
